Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, honoured Paris Olympics 2024 double bronze medalist Manu Bhaker on behalf of the seafarer community.
Bhaker, the daughter of a seasoned seafarer, received a Phoolam Gamusa, a model ship, and a ₹10 lakh cheque from the Indian Ports Association (IPA) in recognition of her historic achievement as the only Indian to win two bronze medals in a single Olympics. Bhaker, who shared her journey of discipline and focus from her seafarer upbringing, also interacted with young seafarers, inspiring them to strive for excellence. Sonowal praised her perseverance and credited the government’s sports initiatives for fostering such talent.
Ram Kishan Bhaker, father of Baker is a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy, while her mother, Sumedha, is a school teacher. The event also recognized Bhaker’s parents for their support and featured prominent officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.
