Morgan Stanley International Chairman and Others Missing After Mega-Yacht Sinks off Italian Coast

Porticello, Italy
Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and five others are missing after the luxury yacht “Bayesian” capsized off the Italian coast, struck by a tornado.
A luxury yacht named the Bayesian, carrying 22 people, sank off the coast of Italy near the port of Porticello on Monday morning after being struck by a tornado. Among the missing are Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, and British tech tycoon Mike Lynch along with his daughter, Hannah. The yacht, a 184-foot luxury sailboat, capsized following the severe weather event, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation by Italian authorities.
The Italian civil protection agency has confirmed that the ship’s chef, Canadian-born Thomas Recaldo, has been found dead, while 15 others, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, managed to escape the sinking yacht. The survivors were rescued and taken to local hospitals, with some still recovering from their injuries. Despite the efforts of the Italian coast guard, which deployed divers to search the wreckage approximately 160 feet deep, six individuals, including Bloomer and Lynch, remain missing.
This tragic incident occurred as Lynch was celebrating a recent legal victory, having been acquitted of fraud charges related to the sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard. The yacht, built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and last refitted in 2020, was owned by a firm where Bacares. The sudden and violent storm that led to the yacht’s sinking has left the maritime community in shock, as authorities continue their search for the missing passengers.
