Canada
BC Ferries is grappling with disruptions after its 60-year-old Queen of New Westminster ferry lost a propeller, forcing the vessel out of service.
BC Ferries, one of the world’s largest ferry operators, is grappling with fleet challenges after its 60-year-old flagship, Queen of New Westminster, lost a propeller, leading to service disruptions. The vessel, operating between Victoria and Vancouver, has been sidelined for repairs, impacting operations during the busy summer season. Divers discovered the missing propeller, and the ferry is undergoing repairs at Esquimalt Dry Dock, with parts shortages potentially delaying its return to service. This incident highlights the strain on BC Ferries’ aging fleet, prompting the company to accelerate its vessel renewal strategy with plans to add seven new vessels by 2029.
