Washington State Ferries’ attempt to quietly sell off two decommissioned ferries, Elwha and Klahowya, for recycling in Ecuador has spiraled into a public embarrassment. The vessels, which had been sold for $100,000 each to Ecuadorian buyer Nelson Armas, were being towed to a recycling facility when equipment failures led to the aborting of the trip. The South American crew hired for the job was left stranded aboard the tugboat, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection ultimately stepping in to detain and deport them.
In light of the failures, WSF has terminated the contract with Armas, citing multiple missed deadlines and contractual breaches. The ferry operator has forfeited the buyer’s payment as damages and is now actively seeking new buyers for the vessels. The aim is to free up space at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility for current fleet operations and future maintenance needs. WSF has emphasized its commitment to seafarer welfare while expressing regret over the treatment of the crew. The failed sale comes as WSF faces broader challenges in fleet replacement and maintenance.
