Red Sea,
Salvage efforts for the burning Greek tanker “Sounion” in the Red Sea resumed on September 13, with two Greek tugs, including the “Agaion Pelagos”, arriving at the scene. Escorted by French and Greek warships, the tugs will assist two commercial salvage vessels hired by the tanker’s insurers to tow the vessel to a safer location. The renewed operation follows a previously abandoned attempt earlier this month due to technical and security concerns.
EUNAVFOR Aspides confirmed it will provide protection for the salvage mission, and navigational advisories have been issued, warning ships to stay five nautical miles away from the *Sounion*. The tanker remains anchored and on fire but is not leaking oil from its cargo of 150,000 tons of crude. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, fearing that the fire could spread or cause structural damage.
