BC Ferries is advancing its fleet renewal strategy, addressing challenges posed by its aging vessels and the rising demand for ferry services. The company announced the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to build five new ferries, with deliveries starting in 2029, and an additional two vessels by 2037.
As one of the largest ferry operators globally, BC Ferries has been managing one of the oldest fleets, recently facing operational issues, including the loss of a propeller on the 60-year-old Queen of New Westminster. The company is aiming to modernize its 37-vessel fleet, which serves over 22 million passengers and eight million vehicles annually.
Two vessels, Queen of Surrey and Queen of Oak Bay, will undergo life-extension work at local shipyards. The new ships, designed by LMG Marin, will be among the world’s largest double-ended ferries, with increased capacity for 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers.
BC Ferries President & CEO, Nicolas Jimenez, emphasized the company’s commitment to balancing capacity growth with affordability, stating, “This approach directly addresses customer expectations for reliable service and affordable fares.”
